Latest Updates

9.18.24  We opened here at Becker Drive on 9/3 as a Staff Day, and 9/4 with students. Construction on the new wing continues, as does some on other areas of the building and exterior.

Our parking lot has been repaved and sealed, and a broken sidewalk along the bus lane has been replaced.

So many details, such as walls being painted, floors being sealed, the courtyard outfacing walls being painted. Everywhere you turn there’s work being done. The LeChase team is amazing, and their subcontractors are too.

Students are happy and excited, especially those who have been with us. One of the favorite new things is the water fountain where they can fill up their water bottles and watch the count of plastic bottles saved by doing so.

Our Ribbon Cutting is on for next week! We hope to see everyone contributing to A Building of Our Own along the way. Find more about this event in the events tab under Fund Development.

We are still fundraising for this huge project. We’ve been pledged some amazing gifts, and while we await them, we are paying for all of the work getting done. Any amount you might be able to contribute is deeply appreciated. Thank you!

8.22.24

Another day of moving in! Today the remainder of classrooms could move, and some of our shared spaces. While there’s much left to do, we feel so great being here and starting to settle in.

The classrooms and offices that moved last week are looking fantastic!

Our Most Recent Updates .....

8.20.24 Transformed front door area!

Today, we were incredibly fortunate to have a group of dedicated volunteers from CDPHP come and work their magic on our outdoor entry area. With tireless energy, they weeded, planted bulbs for next spring’s beautiful flowers, and trimmed the hedges, giving the space a vibrant new look. It truly looks amazing and has brought a fresh, welcoming feel to our entrance. We can’t thank these wonderful volunteers enough for their hard work and commitment to making our surroundings shine. Your efforts are deeply appreciated by everyone at Crossroads!

8.19.24 Successful Playground Fencing Installation Completed!

Mariaville Fencing Company has done an outstanding job installing the new fencing around the playground. The entire installation was completed in just one day, and the results are truly impressive. The fence looks amazing and is a perfect complement to our new space.

The installation includes two gates, one a 10-foot gate that will be incredibly useful when we need to bring in mulch or other large supplies. This feature will ensure that maintaining the playground is both efficient and hassle-free.

We’re thrilled with the outcome and can’t wait for the children to enjoy the enhanced safety and aesthetics of the new playground.

8.16.24 What’s a new building without our picnic tables?

Early in the spring, one of our lovely families, the Morrettis, inquired about removing or repairing our picnic tables, which had become damaged over the 14 years we’ve been at the N. Westcott location. Following some conversation, Jeff, the family dad, hired a contractor, Jim Cleary, who has been repairing the tables a little at a time all summer long.

Now Jim, is a heck of a nice guy, and has done a beautiful job of making these well-used tables like new again. The time, precision and care he’s poured into this project have been amazing.

This morning, we found that he’s also added a heart-felt touch, which makes these tables even more special.

We are deeply grateful for this project being done for us. Between Jeff and Laura and Jim, all of our picnic tables are restored gorgeously, ready for the kids to use again in September.

Thank you.

8.16.24

Our front office at the current time.

Missing: the desk, the chairs, the clutter, and Melissa Ragone. All are off to the new building, minus the clutter!

8.13.24  Today is the first day some of us are in the building! There is still a lot ahead, but wow, when you see some of our preschool rooms in the midst of setting up, it is so very exciting! Here’s a sneak peek. Some of us, too, are still operating from Westcott. We will continue to keep you updated here.

8.9.24 With just 3 days until our move begins, there has been so much progress here this past week. Things are moving quickly, and will continue to, in stages. The floors on the preschool side are done, the bathrooms are installed, and the sides of the additional wing are up. Colors are on the exterior walls, and the cleaning company has been vigilant already.

There has never in our 25+ year history been a time like this. Yes, we have moved before, but the time we moved over 13 years ago we had just around 50 students and a similar number of staff members. It’s a huge undertaking which we still need a great deal of help with.
If you were thinking of donating to help, we need you now more than ever. Every bit will help us pay the many expenses involved in this project. We are deeply grateful for the gifts helping so far, and for the pledges for future gifts.
Thank you for following the progress here and for being part of the journey to A Building of Our Own.
7.31.24 Many things are happening, from the addition wing to the playground installation, to the flooring being torn up in preparation for the new flooring. Even brick replacement on the exterior.
We start our move-in on 8/12!

6.28.24 Speaker Heastie Continues Statewide Tour, Joining Assemblyman Santabarbara
to Announce $1.2 Million for Crossroads Center for Children

Amazing News: $1.2 Million Pledge for Crossroads Center for Children!
We are beyond thrilled to announce that today, Speaker Carl Heastie @cheastie and @Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara visited the new Crossroads Center for Children building as part of Speaker Heastie’s statewide tour. This generous pledge is a monumental step forward for us, ensuring that we can provide an even better learning environment for the amazing children and families we serve. The new building will be a place where dreams are nurtured, and every child gets the opportunity to thrive.

2024 ASB Speaker Crossroads Tour PR

7.10.24  Friends, we have already raised about half a million dollars towards a 7.4 million dollar project! We are deeply thankful for this outpouring of support. Our numeration is even higher if we include some very big expected gifts. In the meantime, we are paying some big bills on the construction side every day, and also continuing to pay rent here in Rotterdam.

We are asking for the help of our community to help us raise another $500K by 8/31. Any amount will help us meet a challenge that will allow us to receive a match on our total raised. This goal might seem close but it is urgently needed.

Click the button above to donate. Any amount will bring us closer to our goal. Our platform is secure, simple and you can choose to pay in various ways including check. Thank you!

Q. Does the money raised at your bowl-a-thon, gala, golf, and other events help?

A.  All of our regular fund development is absolutely  necessary in funding our ongoing programs and services. We consistently raise funding for running the program, meeting the gap between our tuition rates and the actual costs of meeting the needs of our children. However, since we need these monies to fund our program itself, the fundraising we are doing for this project A BUILDING OF OUR OWN,  is above and beyond all of our regular fundraising.

Progress photos & Updates

7.19.24

You can see the remarkable changes since our last entry – the new wing is being fortified and strengthened, flooring and walls have undergone extensive updates, new wires and pipes for water and lighting have been installed, and perhaps most exciting for the kids to know is that the playground install is underway!

2.13.24 We’re beyond excited to share the news that we are BUILDING OWNERS! Our closing went through late this afternoon.

Background and the need for our own building.

Since 2010, Crossroads has enjoyed our location on North Westcott Road in Schenectady. We lease 25,000 sq ft of space in our current building for all 12 months of the year. The building has long served its purpose; it was originally built as an office building, and was retrofitted for us when a watermain break devastated the previous building we leased space in. We have always been grateful to have a place to provide services but the space has significant inefficiencies and does not belong to Crossroads.

Our Board and Executive Director have long discussed the pros and cons of owning versus leasing, and about 3 years ago, with our lease end in sight, and the availability of a near-perfect building opening, the timing was right to decide to move forward. This particular site is an opportunity that cannot be ignored, one that will give our children the best environment for learning, growing, and succeeding.

The building we are in the process of purchasing is just about 2 miles west of our current site. It was built as a school and with individuals with disabilities in mind and has been unoccupied since Covid shutdowns were in effect. It has ample green space, an outdoor courtyard with raised garden beds, dedicated gym space, high ceilings, wide hallways, lots of light, classrooms with bathrooms, administrative offices, conference rooms, a welcoming reception area, a loading dock, and so much room to grow planfully and strategically in the future. We envision being able to more effectively serve our community, collaborate with other organizations, and most of all be a welcoming and enriching center of education and therapy for our children and families.

The space, 22,000 square feet, is smaller than our current space, but by constructing an additional wing, and restructuring some of the spaces, all of our current classrooms, therapies, and offices will fit, and it will cost us less per square foot. The entire project – purchase, addition construction, fit up – is estimated to cost 9.2 million dollars, so a decision to phase the project and complete essential aspects only in this first phase has been made, bringing our costs down to 7.4 million. We were hoping to finance up to 5.4, however, that number has decreased, so the scope of Phase 1 has along with it. While we have plentiful ideas and plans for future phases, phase 1 will strictly involve the purchase of the building, rehab of several spaces, and a new addition to fit our current population. Our campaign fundraising goal is $2 million. The project will save Crossroads money overall in the future every month.

This project is getting underway soon. We are currently awaiting some final approvals, and hope to close on the building in late January if all goes as planned. There is work to do on the fronts of fundraising and construction before we are ready to move into our new location, which we hope to do in September 2024.   While we ensure that all of the conditions pass approval, costs are already adding up for work by engineers, consultants, legal fees, and so on. We are grateful for our early, grassroots-level donors for investing in the future of Crossroads from the start of our conversations, and to the many who have become involved along the way.  We are excited about gaining new supporters and invite anyone with an interest to connect.

You are invited to join us today in supporting our students and their families for years to come by contributing.  This project  will move Crossroads from lease to ownership, from temporary to permanent, from adequate to perfect.

With so many opportunities to give to worthy causes, we are grateful to so many people for jumping in early to lead the charge of raising funds to purchase this building, build on to it to be able to fit our total enrollment and make changes to the existing spaces to meet the needs of our classes and therapies.

Thank you!

Crossroads Mission & Approach
To prepare individuals with and without developmental disabilities for life success within their family and community. We utilize interventions from the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA) which is a branch of psychology and education with a foundation based on scientific analysis of human behavior and learning.

We want the public to know that we are here to help and that we believe fully in using the methods which have been proven effective through scientific research. We encourage family members to learn about applied behavior analysis. Here are some great resources

We invite you to reach out to let us know you are interested in helping! Contact VickiR@Crossroadcenter.org to start a conversation.
