Our Game is ON! (Our Game On grant program, that is!)

September 27, 2018

A few months back, we shared that we’d been selected for a Game On grant from Action for Healthy Kids.

Action for Healthy Kids selects Crossroads for a Go Grant!

The money was received just before fall session started, and today, several of the items that we ordered for the program were delivered. Yay!

A grant from Action for Healthy Kids will help Crossroads update Physical Education needs!

At Crossroads, we’ve always been proactive about physical education and active play, about incorporating movement into the learning day, and about nutrition and healthy eating.

However, funds for cool new equipment is hard to come by so this grant provides for more options to offer the students here. Our teachers and therapists can now access several new activities for their students, including basketball, soccer, yoga, and soft frisbees. More options means more interest from our children in being physically active, and more physical activity will benefit the health and wellness of our student population. Many thanks to Cindy Francis, our new Program Bookkeeper, and her husband,, Gary who are putting together the basketball hoop for us!

As a recipient of the grant, Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) requires certain items be completed during the year. We have a small team here working on making sure that the project parts of the grant are carried out as per the requirements. One is that AFHK is organizing a study to see if the grant helps kids across the country improve in the areas of healthy eating and physical activity benefits. Our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are participating in this study with their parents’ help. Another is that we implement a fitness-oriented event for our families during Every Kid Healthy Month which is April. We’re thinking along the lines of a timed walk around our big parking lot followed by a healthy snack or our Healthy Food Program end of year celebration. We’d love any ideas and hands-on help for this as we get closer, so please reach out to let us know if you want to be involved.

Thank you, again, Action for Healthy Kids, for the funding to expand on our Physical Education program offerings!

Thanks for the Dances at Ballroom Dance Week!Happy October!
